Dr. John Nishimuta stresses the need for a good audiologist...
I had an acoustic neuroma removed from the auditory nerve of my right ear when I was 52. Four years later Meniere’s Disease was diagnosed in the left ear. With profound hearing loss in the left ear and deaf in the right ear, there was great concern about my industrial job which required extensive travel and day to day customer interaction. Fortunately, my employer wanted to keep me doing what I did and so the search began for the best hearing aid available.
More clarity became my mantra through the years as I worked with one audiologist then another. The procedure was always a hearing test followed by does this sound better or does that. After a lot of trial and error and too many hearing aids, I became resigned to this is as good as it gets. Finally the day came we became retirees. Softer and quieter voices instead of loud machinery became the challenge.
With the thought that maybe enough time had passed for hearing aids to have adopted the advances in computer technology, I began visiting local hearing aid specialists. After giving everyone their best shot, I was about to give up on anything better being out there when I encountered Dr. Joe Holmes. Having the proper equipment, and a thorough knowledge of my hearing aid, he opened up its capability. It wasn’t a lack of technology that held back my hearing all those years, it was having the right audiologist. I think back of all the moments I didn’t need to experience if I had met him eleven years ago. My case is more challenging than many, but an independent knowledgeable and capable audiologist can not only point to the best hearing aid for one’s situation but also open up the capability of the hearing aid.

Dear Dr. Holmes:
This correspondence is to let you know how my world has changed since visiting your office for a hearing test. I knew I was losing my ability to hear but was not aware of how profound my hearing loss was. I felt that the people around me were talking low and wondered why they did not speak louder. I had been gradually losing my hearing for about forty years. I had checked with audiologists twice to possibly get some help. I was told I had nerve deafness and it was inherited. My father and his father had the same problem. Before my father passed he had two hearing aids but never wore them because he said he heard too much noise and still could not understand words. I had a bad experience with an audiologist visit where I was fitted with a hearing aid to try. It did not help. Due to the hospitalization of my husband I returned it a few days late and had to pay the $2,000.00. I never could
use the hearing aid. I had come to the conclusion that I could not be helped just like my Dad. I was adamant about never paying for another hearing aid I could not use. My son-in-law insisted that I visit you, Dr. Holmes. He is a patient of yours and is pleased with how you have helped him. His hearing loss was in one ear due to loud noises. I still was not convinced you could help me but told him I would see you. My family was tired of yelling at me but I did not realize they were yelling to talk to me. He made the appointment.
On my first visit to your office I was amazed at how low Paula's voice was as she checked me in. I had to have my son-in-law answer for me as I could not hear her words. I wondered why she spoke so low. My family had been talking very loud to me and I had to be close to them to hear their voices. I did not realize this was happening. I just wondered why they would not speak up. I wondered why the grandfather clock chimed so low. I could no longer have a conversation on the telephone. When my little Dachshund needed my attention, he would sit at by me and growl but I would not hear him. I never realized he snores when sleeping while sitting in chair by me. My world was very quiet but I did not realize how quiet.
After your testing and fitting me with two hearing aids I left your office to check out and heard Paula's voice for the first time and realized she did have a voice. It was a totally new world. I walked outside of your office and heard the birds singing. I can have a conversation with my family now. With the extra technology you introduced me to, I can have have a conversation on the telephone. I hear my little Dachshund snoring when he is sleeping in the chair sitting by me. I also hear him asking for attention. I hear the grandfather clock two rooms over. It is awesome. After visiting your office for further adjustments, I am very comfortable wearing the hearing aids.
Now when I take my hearing aids out at night it is eerily quiet and that is a good thing too! I wish I had known about your audiology expertise many years ago. Thank you very much for giving me my hearing back.

I am 73 years old and retired from a career over the past fifty five years in offices where my hearing was important. Receptionist with Phone duties to data processor and legal secretary when I retired.
You introduced me to technology that has made my life better. I was quiet, depressed and withdrawn before because I could not have a conversation with folks. I can hear and talk now. thank you.
Yes you may use my name, comments, and story in any way that you choose that may get the word out about how you can help people with a hearing loss. Hearing loss is very disabling without help. I am convinced you can help people with minimal to severe hearing loss as you have for my so‐in‐law and myself.
Thank You Dr. Holmes
